Applying for recognition of a foreign medical degree programme

What is the procedure for obtaining the recognition of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) for a Medical Degree Programme offered by a Foreign University?
An official letter or an official e-mail (registrar@mc.lk) should be sent to the Registrar, Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) by the Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Dean or Registrar of the University requesting an application form to recognize the Medical Degree Programme offered by the University.
The recognition is done under two main steps. (Step 1 - Submission and evaluation of form 1 and  Step 2 Submission and evaluation of form 2)

Step 1

  • The Registrar will email the template for application (form 1) to the applicant.
  • The applicant should email a softcopy and submit a hard copy of the duly completed form 1 to Registrar.
  • The SLMC evaluates the application (form 1). 
  • If the application (form 1) is approved proceed to step 2.
  • If the application does not satisfy the evaluation criteria and is rejected by the Council, the university will be duly notified. If the application is for a renewal, the Council will submit its recommendation for rejection to the Hon. Minister for ratification of the decision.
  • If a Medical Degree Programme offered by a University is rejected they can re-apply only after two calendar years from the date of rejection.

Step 2

  • If the application (form 1) is approved, the Registrar will email the template for form 2. 
  • The applicant should email a softcopy and submit a hard copy of the duly completed form 2 to the Registrar.
  • If application (form 2) satisfies the evaluation process of the Council, the Council will recognise the medical degree programme for a period of 5 calendar years.
  • The SLMC website will be updated with the university name, address and qualification recognized.
  • If the application does not satisfy the evaluation criteria and is rejected, the Council will submit its recommendation for rejection to the Hon. Minister for ratification of the decision.
  • If a Medical Degree Programme offered by a University is rejected they can re-apply only after two calendar years from the date of rejection.

Recognized Foreign Medical Degree Programmes

Medical degree programmes offered by Foreign Medical Schools recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council for the purpose of Registration to Practise Medicine & Surgery in Sri Lanka under the Medical Ordinance [Chapter 105].
