Step 1: Choose a Medical/Dental School

A student who wishes to study medicine or dental surgery abroad should select a foreign degree programme recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Step 3: Study Abroad, Graduate and Obtain the Degree Certificate

After completion of a medical degree programme the graduate should obtain the final printed certificate of graduation from the university for presentation to the Sri Lanka Medical Council.

Application for transfer between foreign medical degree programmes

The SLMC may entertain applications for transfer between SLMC recognized degree programmes of two countries in exceptional circumstances such as closure of borders preventing returning back to the country or war conditions. The students have to submit the completed application below to da@slmc.gov.lk

Frequently asked questions regarding transfer between foreign medical degree programmes.

1. Can I resume the balance period of my clinical training in another country’s hospital (affiliated or non affiliated to my current university) without transferring to another university?

No. If you are transferring to another country for clinical training then the Final Examination and the degree should be from a SLMC recognised university of that country.

2. After completing my degree am I allowed to sit for the final examination through an online platform?

No. Final clinical exams are on site hands on clinical exams conducted in a hospital setting.

3. Can I do my clinical training in another country and obtain the degree certificate from my current university?

No, Please see 1 above.

4. Can I get the chance to do an internship (A clinical observer training) in Sri Lanka?

You have to complete the ERPM and obtain provisional registration from the SLMC to do the internship in Sri Lanka. Those who have returned back to the country after completing their degree abroad, and waiting for the ERPM, may request for a clinical observership to the Ministry of Health. The SLMC does not arrange clinical observerships,

5. Can I get a letter from SLMC for the transfer, to be handed over to my current university?

No

6. What can I do if my university does not allow me to transfer?

SLMC is unable to assist you in this regard.

7. Can I do online clinical training?

No, clinical training has to be hands on in person onsite hospital based clinical training. Please refer the url
