Message From the President - Sri Lanka Medical Council

It is with profound pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I extend this message to the souvenir to mark the centenary of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). This momentous occasion offers us an opportunity to reflect on a century of service, progress, and resilience in safeguarding the standards of medical education, practice, and ethics in Sri Lanka.
Since its establishment in 1925, the SLMC has stood as the guardian of the medical, dental and allied health professionals, ensuring that the highest standards of competence, integrity, and compassion are upheld in the delivery of healthcare. Over the past hundred years, the Council has evolved in response to the changing needs of society and the rapid advances in medicine and healthcare delivery, consistently striving to protect the public while regulating and supporting the professional community.
As we celebrate this centenary, we also recognize the significant reforms and modernization initiatives that have been undertaken to align the Council with contemporary global standards of medical, dental and allied health regulation. We have strengthened our commitment to transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and innovation — principles that will continue to guide the SLMC as we move forward into a new era.
Our centenary is not only a commemoration of the past but a call to envision the future. In the years ahead, the SLMC will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping a healthcare system that is ethical, patient-centered, and responsive to emerging challenges. We are committed to fostering excellence in medical education, embracing technological advancements, and promoting a culture of continuous professional development.
I extend my sincere gratitude to all past and present members of the Council, healthcare professionals, institutions, and stakeholders who have contributed to the SLMC’s journey. Let us step confidently into the next century, carrying forward the legacy of those who built this institution and committing ourselves to even greater service to the nation.
May the Sri Lanka Medical Council continue to stand as a beacon of trust and excellence for generations to come.
