Ensuring Patient Safety

At the heart of SLMC’s mission is the protection of patients. Through strict licensing standards, ethical oversight, and ongoing monitoring, the Council has safeguarded public health for generations.

"Patient safety is not an option – it is the cornerstone of medical professionalism and public trust."
For a century, the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) has remained steadfast in its mission to ensure the safety and well-being of every patient in the country. From its inception in 1925, the Council has developed and enforced comprehensive standards to regulate the medical profession, ensuring that only qualified, ethical, and competent practitioners are entrusted with the responsibility of patient care.

The SLMC's approach to patient safety is multi-dimensional — it spans the licensing of healthcare professionals, the establishment of ethical and clinical guidelines, the continuous monitoring of medical practice, and a structured response to complaints and misconduct. This framework not only protects individuals but also fosters public confidence in Sri Lanka’s healthcare system.

Key Components of Our Patient Safety Commitment:

• Licensing & Registration

Only individuals with verified academic and professional qualifications are granted registration. The SLMC rigorously evaluates applications to ensure that practitioners meet the required standards before they are allowed to serve patients.

• Ethical and Professional Oversight

Through the Professional Conduct Inquiry (PCI) process, the SLMC investigates complaints made against registered practitioners. Disciplinary action is taken where necessary to uphold the highest ethical standards.

• Guidelines & Awareness

The Council regularly updates ethical guidelines and codes of practice to reflect international best practices and evolving societal needs. These are communicated to practitioners and institutions to ensure alignment with global healthcare safety norms.

• Monitoring and Compliance

Beyond registration, the SLMC engages in periodic reviews and oversight of practitioners and institutions. This ensures ongoing compliance with national regulations and promotes continuous improvement in medical service delivery.

• Patient-Centered Values

At its core, the SLMC is driven by a commitment to dignity, compassion, and accountability in patient care. By ensuring that healthcare providers are not only clinically competent but also ethically grounded, the Council contributes to a safer and more humane health system.

Looking Ahead

As the SLMC enters its second century, the focus on patient safety will only grow stronger. With the advancement of medical technologies, the expansion of healthcare services, and the increasing complexity of patient needs, safeguarding the public will require innovation, vigilance, and collaboration. The SLMC is committed to meeting these challenges with the same integrity and responsibility that has defined its first hundred years.
